The cherry-blossom avenue on the Wuhan University campus at 299 Bayi Road, Wuchang District, runs from the campus gate up toward the Sino-classical Old Library, and the century-old trees arch over the path to frame the library's distinctive tiered roof in the background behind a tunnel of pink blossoms. The path faces roughly toward the library building, so early morning brings soft, even light along the avenue before the sun rises high enough to create harsh dappled shadow through the branches; this same early window is essential for a second reason, since the university caps daily visitor numbers during bloom season and tickets for the day can sell out by mid-morning. The bloom window is short and specific -- typically 10 to 14 days in late March -- and its exact timing shifts slightly year to year with spring temperatures, so checking the university's current bloom forecast before visiting is advisable. Crowds during the bloom are among the heaviest of any single-day photography event in Hubei, with the avenue reaching capacity and forming slow-moving queues along the path; a tripod is impractical during peak hours given the density of visitors, and handheld shooting is the only realistic approach once the avenue fills.
