Baisha Zhou (White Sand Island)

Baisha Zhou, or White Sand Island, is a low-lying river sandbar in the Yangtze River near Zhuankou in Hanyang District, Wuhan, roughly 12 kilometres from the city centre. The island is formed of fine, pale river sand exposed as the Yangtze's water level drops through the drier months, creating a broad, open shoreline rather than an enclosed cove. The river water here runs the typical silty brown-green of the middle Yangtze, so clarity is limited and swimming is informal and current-dependent rather than a managed activity. The exposed sand flat can stretch several hundred metres along the river depending on the season, with little shelter from wind since the island sits mid-channel with no surrounding dunes or trees to break the breeze. Baisha Zhou draws a mostly local, family-oriented and day-tripper crowd from Hanyang and Hanyang-adjacent neighbourhoods, especially at weekends in late spring and summer, when groups set up picnics, fly kites, and let children play in the shallows near the shore. There is no permanent party or nightlife scene; the atmosphere is closer to an informal riverside outing than a resort beach. Amenities are basic and seasonal: picnic areas with open ground for mats and umbrellas, and food stalls that appear during the warmer months selling grilled skewers, drinks, and simple snacks, though these thin out or disappear entirely outside of the May-to-September season. There are no permanent restrooms, sun loungers, or lifeguard stations on the island, so visitors bring their own supplies and should not expect facilities found at managed beaches elsewhere in China. Access is by taxi or ride-hailing service from Hanyang District, taking around 30 minutes; there is no direct metro or bus connection to the sandbar itself, and the final approach can involve a short walk over uneven, sandy or muddy ground depending on recent water levels. Because the island is a seasonal river feature, its extent and even its accessibility change with the Yangtze's water level, and it can be partly or fully submerged during high-water periods in the summer flood season, so visitors should check current conditions before planning a trip focused specifically on beach time.
