The Longmen Grottoes are a UNESCO World Heritage Site carved into limestone cliffs on both banks of the Yi River, south of Luoyang in Henan province, at Longmen Avenue in Luolong District. Work began around 493 AD when the Northern Wei court moved its capital to Luoyang, and carving continued for roughly four centuries through the Tang dynasty. The cliffs hold more than 100,000 Buddhist statues in over 2,000 caves and niches, along with thousands of inscriptions and several pagodas.

UNESCO-listed cave temples carved over 400 years from 493 AD along the Yi River, holding more than 100,000 Buddhist statues. The 17 m Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple is the centerpiece.

The centrepiece is the Fengxian Temple cave, whose seated Vairocana Buddha is about 17 metres tall and dates to the Tang dynasty. Other notable sites include the Guyang Cave with early Northern Wei inscriptions, the Binyang Caves and the Lotus Flower Cave. The main sculpted cliff is on the west bank and is walked along a level riverside path lined with caves. A bridge leads to the quieter east bank, where the Xiangshan Temple area and the tomb of the poet Bai Juyi offer views back across the river toward the main cliff face. That view, especially in late afternoon, is the classic photo angle. A thorough visit takes three to four hours, and the site can also be seen in about two hours by focusing on the west bank highlights. Guided tours or audio guides are helpful because most caves lack detailed signage in English. Crowds are heaviest on weekends, holidays and mid-morning, when tour groups gather in front of the Vairocana Buddha. Weekday mornings at opening are the most peaceful. A night tour is available with illuminated statues, sold on a separate ticket, and is popular in warm months. Many statues have suffered damage over the centuries, with heads and hands missing from many figures. The paved path and river setting make the visit pleasant, and Luoyang restaurants and the old town are a short ride away.
