Erqi Memorial Tower stands in Erqi Square in Erqi District, at the heart of Zhengzhou's old commercial district in Henan province. The 63 metre twin-tower structure commemorates the strike of 7 February 1923 by railway workers on the Beijing-Hankou line, which was violently suppressed and became a landmark event in the history of the Chinese labour movement. The tower was built in 1971 and is the best-known symbol of Zhengzhou. Its two joined towers rise in a stepped form with a pagoda-like roof on top and a clock feature, and they are recognisable across the city centre. The base is surrounded by a busy square and is a major traffic and pedestrian junction, with department stores, street vendors and shopping streets radiating outwards. Visitors can view the tower freely from the square at any time, and it is illuminated in the evening, which is the best time for photographs. A small museum inside the tower presents displays on the strike and railway history, and the tower can be entered for a small fee, about ¥5, during opening hours from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The interior visit is short, and the whole stop takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Photographers often shoot from the open plaza looking up at the twin towers, or from nearby pedestrian bridges and shopping streets for a view with the city's traffic and signage. Crowds fill the square on weekends and evenings, when shoppers and tourists mix, while early mornings are quiet. The site is well served by Metro Line 1 and Line 2, which meet at Erqi Square station. Many visitors combine it with a visit to the nearby Shang City Ruins and the local food streets. Photography is allowed everywhere, though inside the memorial rooms visitors should follow staff guidance.
