Lingxiao Pagoda stands on Zhenzhou South Street in Zhengding County, in Hebei province, within what was formerly the compound of Tianning Temple. Zhengding, historically the prefectural seat of Zhenzhou and Zhending, preserves an exceptional group of early pagodas, and Lingxiao Pagoda is one of the four best known, alongside the pagodas of Kaiyuan Temple, Guanghui Temple and Linji Temple. The temple's origins lie in the Tang dynasty, while the standing pagoda is generally attributed to the Jin dynasty, with later repairs. The pagoda is an octagonal, nine-storey tower of brick construction with a timber-framed exterior, rising roughly 41 metres. Its lower storeys combine brick walls with timber balconies, eaves and bracket sets, giving the structure a different silhouette from the all-brick Tang pagodas nearby. Inside, a staircase and internal chambers once allowed ascent, and the structure was known historically for the sound of its hanging bells. Over the centuries the pagoda survived earthquakes and fires, though the surrounding temple halls were largely lost. Repairs in the Qing dynasty and in the twentieth century secured the tower's stability, and the surrounding area has been landscaped as a small park. The pagoda is a protected cultural heritage site at the national level. Visitors typically spend about 30 to 45 minutes at the site, viewing the pagoda from the grounds, reading the plaques, and photographing the carved details. It is within walking or short taxi distance of the other major Zhengding sights, which makes it practical to include in a half-day circuit of the old town.
