Xibaipo Scenic Area Walking Loop

The Xibaipo Scenic Area Walking Loop is an easy 2-4 km circuit around Xibaipo Village in Pingshan County, about 85-90 km northwest of central Shijiazhuang in Hebei province, China. Xibaipo is best known as the site where the Communist Party of China leadership based its headquarters in 1948-49 before moving to Beijing, and the village is preserved as a memorial landscape beside the Hutuo River reservoir. The loop links the memorial hall, restored former residences and meeting rooms, village lanes and landscaped paths. Access is by car or taxi along the expressway to Pingshan (about 1.5 hours from Shijiazhuang); long-distance buses serve Pingshan with a local connection onward, so timetables should be checked at the bus station. Parking is available near the scenic-area entrance, and admission has been free with ID registration, so a passport should be carried. Elevation change is negligible, the terrain is gentle and rolling, and the surfaces are paved lanes, packed earth and flagstone, making this one of the most approachable walks in the Shijiazhuang area. Technical difficulty is nil, and the route is well signed in Chinese with some English labels. Shade comes from village trees and building eaves, but open stretches near the reservoir are exposed to the sun in summer. Key landmarks include the memorial hall, the preserved headquarters compounds and the reservoir viewpoints; most visitors spend 2-4 hours including the exhibits. A sensible turn-around is at the reservoir overlook before returning through the village lanes. Water and simple meals are available from stalls and restaurants in and near the village, and there are covered rest points but no mountain huts. The area is busiest on weekends, school-group days and public holidays, when queues form at the memorial hall, so a weekday morning gives a calmer walk.
