Longxing Temple at 109 East Zhongshan Road in Zhengding County is one of the most important Buddhist monuments in northern China and the headline attraction of the old city of Zhengding, about 20 km north of central Shijiazhuang in Hebei Province. The complex dates to the Sui dynasty and was greatly expanded in the Song dynasty, when Emperor Taizu ordered the casting of the giant bronze Guanyin in 971.

The standing Thousand-Armed Guanyin, roughly 22 metres tall, is the centrepiece of the Dabei Pavilion, and its scale and bronze casting are the main reasons visitors make the trip. Other highlights include the Moni Hall, an unusual cross-shaped Song-era building, the Mahavira Hall, and the revolving sutra repository, a rare wooden structure that can still turn on its axis. The temple is laid out on a central axis with halls rising towards the great pavilion, so visitors can follow one logical route from the entrance through courtyards to the back. A full visit typically takes two to three hours, and photographers favour the Dabei Pavilion from the courtyard and the roofline of the Moni Hall in morning light. Crowds are lightest on weekday mornings and in spring and autumn, while holiday weekends bring noisy domestic tour groups. Admission is CNY 50, with discounts for students and children, and a combined itinerary with Kaiyuan Temple, Linji Temple and Rongguo Mansion makes a rewarding day in Zhengding. Visitors reach the town by intercity bus or DiDi from Shijiazhuang, and the temple is within walking distance of other old-city sights. Modest dress and quiet behaviour are expected in the active worship halls.

When to visit

Weekday mornings in spring and autumn offer comfortable temperatures and thin crowds. Avoid national holiday weeks when the site is very busy.

Accessibility

The temple has uneven stone paving and many raised thresholds and steps at the halls, so wheelchair access is limited. The courtyards are largely level, but upper levels of some buildings are not accessible.
