Shanhaiguan, in Shanhaiguan District of Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, China, is a Ming-dynasty fortress town that marks the eastern end of the inland Great Wall, where the mountains meet the Bohai coastal plain. Its name means Mountain-Sea Pass, and its strategic position made it a gateway between the Chinese heartland and the north-east for centuries. The walled old town retains its rectangular layout, with four gates and surrounding moat, and is one of the best preserved military towns of the Ming period.

The main sight is the East Gate tower, known as Tianxia Diyi Guan, or First Pass Under Heaven. A large horizontal plaque with those characters hangs from the upper storey of the 13-metre tower, and visitors climb the rampart to see the plaque, the arrow slits and the defensive forecourt that projects from the gate. From the top of the rampart, views extend across the tiled roofs of the old town to the mountains in the north. Smaller exhibits in and around the tower show weapons, models and maps explaining the garrison's history.

Beyond the gate, the old town streets are lined with reconstructed Ming and Qing-style shopfronts selling snacks and souvenirs, with quieter residential lanes behind them. A typical visit to the gate and its immediate surroundings takes two to three hours, longer if walking the town's wall circuit or visiting the nearby Great Wall sections at Jiaoshan and Laolongtou. Early morning is the best time to walk the ramparts, before tour groups and the souvenir stalls become busy, and crowds peak in summer around the Beidaihe holiday season and on national holidays. The light is best at the gate in the morning, when the plaque faces east. Winter is quiet but cold, with strong coastal winds.
