Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street

Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street combines three connected roads -- Shangjiu Road, Xiajiu Road, and Dishifu Road -- into a 1.2-kilometer commercial strip in Liwan District, one of Guangzhou's oldest urban areas and historically the heart of the city's Cantonese merchant culture. The street is lined with distinctive qilou arcade buildings, a colonial-era architectural style with covered walkways at street level that shelter pedestrians from sun and rain while shops operate underneath, giving the district a visual character distinct from Tianhe's glass towers. Retail here spans mainstream fashion chains, gold and jewelry shops reflecting Liwan's traditional trading role, and a dense concentration of Cantonese snack vendors selling items like shrimp dumplings, egg waffles, and double-skin milk pudding. Prices in chain stores are fixed, while snack stalls and small accessory vendors sometimes allow light negotiation, particularly for bulk purchases. The street sits close to other Liwan attractions including the Guangzhou Museum of Chinese Medicine and the historic Enning Road old-town area, making it easy to pair a shopping visit with a walk through some of the city's best-preserved traditional streetscapes. Evenings and weekends bring the heaviest crowds, when the qilou arcades are lit and food stalls are at their busiest, and the pedestrian-only design means the entire street is accessible without navigating traffic.
