Guangzhou Restaurant (Wenchang Branch)

Guangzhou Restaurant has stood at the intersection of Wenchang South Road and the Shangxiajiu pedestrian street since 1935, and for much of the twentieth century it functioned as the city's benchmark for formal Cantonese banquet cooking. The Wenchang branch is built around a courtyard styled after the gardens of Suzhou, with red lanterns strung between covered walkways and carved screens separating private dining rooms from the main hall, a layout meant to evoke old Lingnan hospitality rather than a modern hotel restaurant. The kitchen is best known for its roast goose, glazed and hung in the traditional style, alongside a version of Wenchang steamed chicken that has appeared on the menu for decades, and a deep-fried milk custard dessert that the restaurant helped popularize as a Guangzhou specialty. Dim sum service runs all day, with the morning session drawing a mix of elderly regulars who have eaten there for years and visitors following food guides through Xiguan's historic quarter. Larger private rooms are used for wedding banquets, family celebrations and business dinners, and it is common to see a mix of formal multi-course meals happening alongside casual dim sum tables in the same building. Its position steps from the Shangxiajiu pedestrian street and the Yong Qing Fang heritage block makes it an easy stop to combine with an afternoon of walking through the old Xiguan neighborhood.
