Zhenhai Tower rises on a hill within Yuexiu Park in Yuexiu District, built in 1380 during the early Ming dynasty as the tallest and most strategically placed watchtower along Guangzhou's fortified city wall, overlooking the old city from its northern high ground. As Guangzhou modernized through the early 20th century, most of the surrounding wall was dismantled to make way for new roads and development, leaving Zhenhai Tower as one of the last substantially intact structures from the original fortification system and a rare physical link to the city's defensive history spanning nearly 650 years. In 1929 the tower was repurposed to house what has since grown into the historical wing of the Guangzhou Museum, with five floors of galleries tracing the city's development from prehistoric settlement through the Nanyue kingdom, the Qing-dynasty trade era and into the twentieth century, arranged so that each floor roughly corresponds to a different historical period as visitors climb. Visitors reach the tower via a walk up through Yuexiu Park, then move through the chronological galleries before reaching a rooftop terrace where several preserved Qing-dynasty cannons and sections of the old wall remain visible against the backdrop of the modern city skyline. A full visit through the tower's galleries and terrace takes about an hour to ninety minutes. The clearest historical photo opportunity is the terrace itself, where the old cannons and wall fragments sit in direct visual contrast with the high-rise towers of contemporary Guangzhou beyond, encapsulating the layered history for which the site is valued.
