1

Kaiping Diaolou UNESCO Watchtowers

Kaiping's UNESCO World Heritage watchtowers are among China's most photogenic and historically fascinating sites. The 1,800+ Diaolou (fortified towers) were built by returned overseas Chinese migrants who blended Chinese architecture with Art Deco, Roman, Greek, and Gothic styles. The best villages to visit are Zili (自力村) with its 15 towers rising from lotus paddies, and Jinjiangli (锦江里).

2

Danxia Mountain UNESCO Geopark

Danxia Mountain is Guangdong's most dramatic natural attraction — vivid red sandstone formations eroded over 65 million years into towers, peaks, and cliffs. The UNESCO World Heritage site encompasses 292 sq km. The most famous feature is Yangyuan Rock (阳元石), a naturally sculpted 28m-high phallic rock formation that is one of China's most photographed natural features. The Jiaoshi Peak gives the best panoramic views of the red landscape.

3

Chaozhou Ancient City and Guangji Bridge

Chaozhou is arguably Guangdong's most complete ancient city — streets of Qing-era residences, ornate clan halls, and the 800-year-old Guangji Bridge are extraordinarily intact. The city is also the capital of Teochew cuisine. Pai Fang Street (牌坊街) is lined with Ming and Qing dynasty decorated archways. The city's craft traditions — woodcarving, embroidery, ceramics — are still practiced and sold in old city shops.

4

Shunde Culinary Capital

Shunde is universally regarded as the origin of Cantonese cuisine and was named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2014. The water village district, Xiqiao Mountain, and historic Qinghui Garden set the backdrop for eating classics: double-skin milk, raw fish salad, water hyacinth river shrimp, and steamed freshwater fish.

5

Zhaoqing Star Lake and Dinghu Mountain

Zhaoqing offers the combination of Star Lake's karst limestone lake scenery and Dinghu Mountain's ancient forest reserve in a single day. The seven interconnected lakes of Xinghu reflect the surrounding karst peaks like a miniature Guilin. Dinghu Mountain (China's first nature reserve) offers easy forest trails to waterfalls and Qingyun Temple.

6

Foshan Ancestral Temple and Wing Chun Cultural Heritage

Foshan's historic core is the best-preserved traditional Lingnan district in the Pearl River Delta. The Ancestral Temple (Zu Miao), the Yip Man (Wing Chun) heritage site, Nanfeng Ancient Kiln, and the Lingnan Tiandi development create a compact culture trail. Foshan is also arguably the city where Cantonese food culture is most concentrated.
