Fujian is a coastal province in southeast China facing Taiwan, known for the UNESCO tulou earthen buildings, Gulangyu island, Quanzhou's Maritime Silk Road heritage and the Wuyi Mountains.
- Public
- Fujian has a coastal high-speed rail spine linking Ningde, Fuzhou, Putian, Quanzhou, Xiamen and Zhangzhou, with newer inland lines to Wuyishan and Longyan. Fuzhou and Xiamen have metros; Xiamen also has BRT. Local buses and minibuses reach Tulou villages.
- Taxi
- Taxis are metered and cheap; Didi is cheaper, shows the fare in advance and works with Alipay and WeChat Pay.
- Rental
- Self-drive is hard: foreign visitors need a Chinese driving licence or temporary permit, so most travellers use trains, Didi and buses.
- Walking
- Zhongshan Road, Sanfang Qixiang, Gulangyu and Quanzhou's Old City are walkable, but Fujian's sights are otherwise spread out.

Quanzhou
Local buses and Didi serve the Old City; the Quanzhou rail station is outside the centre.

A mandatory shuttle bus (¥70/day pass) links the scenic area; Wuyishan East station is about 15 km from the scenic gate.
Tulou
Buses run from Longyan to Tulou bus station in Nanjing and from Yongding to Hongkeng; schedules are thin, so ask the guesthouse about onward minibuses.

Transport tips
Travel smarter, not harder.
Book trains on the official 12306 app (English version accepts passports) or Trip.com; tickets work with the passport at the gate
Fuzhou South, Xiamen North, Quanzhou and Wuyishan East are the main high-speed stations; Xiamen Station and Fuzhou Station serve city-centre locations, so check the station name carefully
Pre-book the Gulangyu ferry (real-name, passport details) via the official Xiamen ferry app/WeChat mini-program or Trip.com the day before; holidays sell out
Install Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps; Google Maps is inaccurate in China
Link Alipay or WeChat Pay for metro, buses and Didi
Typhoon warnings (July-September) can stop ferries, Pingtan bridge traffic and flights; keep a spare day
Carry the passport for every train, hotel check-in and ferry
