Gulangyu is a small car-free island off Xiamen, Fujian, that was designated an international settlement in 1903 after Xiamen opened as a treaty port following the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842-1843. Thirteen foreign powers established consulates and trading houses here, and from 1903 until Japanese occupation in 1941 the island was governed by a Municipal Council of foreign and Chinese members. UNESCO inscribed Kulangsu, Gulangyu in 2017 as a Historic International Settlement. The island holds around 1,000 historic buildings in a mix of styles: the Colonial Veranda style, the Amoy Deco hybrid of Chinese and Western motifs, Neoclassical consulates, Gothic and Romanesque churches such as the Trinity Church, and villas built by overseas Chinese returning from Southeast Asia. Landmarks include the former British Consulate, the Japanese Consulate and police station, the Catholic Church, Bagua Building and Shuzhuang Garden. Sunlight Rock, the island's high point, is the site of Koxinga's 17th-century training base. Because vehicles are banned apart from small service carts, the island is walked on foot, and ferries from Xiamen's Dongdu terminal are the only access. Exhibition spaces include the Gulangyu Piano Museum and a history museum in a former residence. Preservation is managed through a heritage protection plan that restricts new building and requires restoration of facades, though high visitor numbers have forced a daily ticket quota on the ferry. Lanes are shaded by banyan trees, and the island mixes museum homes with working residents, cafes and shops.
