Jinluan Bay, Dongshan Island

Jinluan Bay, also called Golden Crown Bay, is one of the main beaches on Dongshan Island in Dongshan County, Zhangzhou, in southern Fujian, China. The bay lies in Zhangtang Town, about 10 km from Dongshan county town, and is known for a wide, fine-sand beach with a gentle slope into the water. The sea here is generally greenish blue and clearer than on the busy Xiamen coast, though conditions vary with wind and tide. The bay is crescent-shaped and relatively open, so waves are usually moderate, which suits swimming and paddling in warm months, but the exposure means breezes can be strong and swimmers should avoid rough days and follow any local warnings. The atmosphere is a laid-back seaside holiday scene for domestic tourists and families, and the island has a quieter feel than the resort strips on larger coasts. Facilities include rental umbrellas, showers and beachfront seafood restaurants that serve fresh fish, shellfish and noodles caught or landed locally. Sun loungers are not guaranteed, and lifeguard hours are not reliably published, so visitors should bring sun protection and swim with care. Access takes some planning: coaches run from Xiamen or Zhangzhou to Dongshan in about 2.5-3 hours, then a taxi to the bay costs about ¥30-40, or visitors can use a local bus. Parking is available near the bay, although it fills on summer weekends and holidays. The best months are May to October, when the water is warm and the weather is generally good, while the shoulder seasons are cooler and quieter. Late afternoon brings softer light for walks along the sand, and the beachfront restaurants make a convenient dinner stop. Typhoons can affect the coast in late summer, so checking forecasts before travelling is wise. Staying overnight on the island allows an early start before day-trippers arrive.
