Shibati Old Street

Shibati Old Street is a redeveloped historic neighborhood in Yuzhong District, immediately adjacent to Jiefangbei, built on the steep cliffside terraces that gave the area its name, meaning 'eighteen steps.' The redevelopment preserves the district's stepped stone stairways and layered terrace architecture while filling the buildings with small food stalls, teahouses, and shops selling local crafts, textiles, and casual clothing, giving it a character distinct from Jiefangbei's mainstream department-store retail just uphill. Goods sold are a mix of small-batch local crafts and mass-produced souvenirs, with the more tourist-facing stalls carrying items of variable quality; genuine local specialty foods and teas tend to be a safer purchase than generic trinkets. Prices at small stalls are sometimes open to light negotiation, though many vendors, particularly food sellers, post fixed prices. Cash and mobile payment are both commonly accepted. The terraced layout means the street climbs and descends via stairways rather than running flat, and the atmosphere is busiest in the evening when teahouses and food stalls fill with both locals and visitors drawn by the lantern-lit terraces and views back toward the Jiefangbei skyline. The area rewards slow exploration of its side stairways and terraces rather than a single straight walk-through, since many of the smaller craft shops sit on upper levels reached only by climbing the old stone steps.
