1

Phnom Kulen National Park

⏱️ 1.5 hours one way by tuk-tuk or taxi

Phnom Kulen is Cambodia's most sacred mountain and the birthplace of the Khmer Empire. Jayavarman II proclaimed himself god-king here in 802 AD. The national park covers 37,500 hectares and includes Cambodia's largest waterfall, the sacred Kbal Spean river of carved lingas, ancient Angkor-era ruins, and a giant reclining Buddha carved into the hilltop. An excellent full-day escape from temple touring.

Highlights: Largest waterfall in Cambodia - swimming permitted, Giant reclining Buddha carved into the mountain summit, River of carved lingas (Kbal Spean) - 2km forest trek, Ancient Angkor-era temple ruins on the plateau, Lush forested national park with wildlife
2

Beng Mealea Temple

⏱️ 1.5 hours one way

Beng Mealea is often described as the lost temple of Cambodia - a massive 12th-century temple complex 68km east of Siem Reap, built on the same scale as Angkor Wat but left almost entirely unrestored. The immense stone blocks have tumbled and the jungle has grown through and over the ruins creating an atmosphere of genuine discovery. Far fewer crowds than Angkor make this feel like finding a temple for the first time.

Highlights: Massive unrestored 12th-century temple, Jungle growing through and over the ruins, Indiana Jones exploration atmosphere, Far fewer crowds than Angkor Wat, Ancient moats and library buildings, Beautiful carved sandstone lintels
3

Koh Ker Temple Complex

⏱️ 2.5-3 hours one way (improving roads)

Koh Ker was the capital of the Khmer Empire for a brief period (928-944 AD) during the reign of King Jayavarman IV. The remote site 120km northeast of Siem Reap contains over 180 temples and monuments spread across the jungle, with the dramatic seven-tiered pyramid of Prasat Thom as the centerpiece. Visitors can climb to the top of the 35-meter pyramid for sweeping jungle views. The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023.

Highlights: Prasat Thom - dramatic 7-tiered pyramid temple, Views from the pyramid top over jungle, 180+ temples and monuments, UNESCO World Heritage Site (2023), Remote and rarely crowded, Giant stone lingam at Prasat Thom

Kampong Phluk Floating Village & Tonle Sap Boat Tour

⏱️ 30-40 minutes by road then 30-40 minutes by boat

Kampong Phluk is a cluster of three villages on the edge of Tonle Sap Lake where the entire community of around 3,000 people lives in wooden houses raised on 6-meter stilts. During the wet season, the houses appear to float directly on the lake. During the dry season, visitors can take small boats through a hauntingly beautiful flooded forest of submerged trees. Far more authentic than the more touristy Chong Kneas, this is one of the most unique village experiences in Southeast Asia.

Highlights: Community of houses on 6-meter stilts, Flooded forest of submerged trees (dry season), Life on Tonle Sap Lake, Sunset over the vast lake, Local fishing community, Elementary school on the water
5

Banteay Chhmar Temple

⏱️ 3 hours one way

One of the most remote and atmospheric temples in Cambodia, Banteay Chhmar is a massive 12th-century Buddhist temple complex located 160km northwest of Siem Reap near the Thai border. Built by Jayavarman VII, the temple rivals Preah Khan in scale but sees only a fraction of the visitors. The famous panels of multi-armed Avalokitesvara are among the finest Khmer bas-reliefs surviving anywhere. A community-based tourism project offers simple homestay accommodation if you want to make it an overnight trip.

Highlights: One of the largest Khmer temples outside Angkor, Famous multi-armed Avalokitesvara bas-relief panels, Almost no tourists - exceptional atmosphere, Community-based tourism project supports local families, Surrounding rice fields and rural Cambodia scenery
6

Preah Vihear Temple

⏱️ 4-5 hours one way

Preah Vihear is one of the most dramatically situated temples in Southeast Asia, perched on the edge of the Dangrek Escarpment at 625 meters elevation, with sheer cliffs dropping into Thailand below. The 11th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva stretches for 800 meters along the cliff top, with the main sanctuary at the very edge of the precipice. The views from the cliff are breathtaking. The temple is also historically significant as the subject of a long-running border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, resolved by the International Court of Justice in Cambodia's favour in 2013.

Highlights: Dramatic cliff-top location at 625m elevation, Sheer drop into Thailand below the main sanctuary, 800-meter processional way with gopuras, Stunning views over the Cambodian plains, UNESCO World Heritage Site (2008)

Battambang - Colonial City, Bamboo Train & Bat Cave

⏱️ 3 hours by road, or 4-8 hours by boat (seasonal)

Battambang is Cambodia's second-largest city and its most charming, with a well-preserved French colonial city center, excellent food scene, thriving arts community, and some of Cambodia's most interesting attractions. The famous bamboo train (nori) - a bamboo platform on railway axles that hurtles along the tracks at alarming speed - is a unique Cambodia experience. The Phnom Sampeau bat cave sees 2-3 million bats emerge at sunset in a spectacular river of black wings. Also worth visiting: Phare Ponleu Selpak's Battambang circus school.

Highlights: Bamboo train (nori) - unique Cambodia experience, 2-3 million bats emerging at sunset from Phnom Sampeau caves, French colonial architecture along the riverside, Thriving local art and restaurant scene, Phare Ponleu Selpak art school (the original Phare circus), Killing cave at Phnom Sampeau (sobering Khmer Rouge history)
