Aleko is the main ski and hiking base in Vitosha Nature Park, about 1,800 metres above sea level on the mountain that rises over Sofia, Bulgaria. Its open slopes face north and east toward the city, and the best sunset views come from the ridges and clearings near the top of the ski area, where the sun sets behind the mountain's western shoulder and warm light washes across the valley.

The strongest frame is a long telephoto view of Sofia spread out on the plain below, with layers of haze and the skyline softened by distance, or a wider scene with the snowy slopes, chairlifts and mountain huts in the foreground. Sunset is the preferred time, as the low light turns the sky orange and pink while the city lights begin to come on in the blue hour afterwards. Clear autumn days give crisp visibility and golden grass on the slopes, while winter brings snow scenes and the activity of skiers, although cold and wind can make shooting difficult. Hazy summer evenings reduce the clarity of the city view. The area is busy on winter weekends with skiers and in summer with hikers, but away from the main lifts and car park there is plenty of space for a tripod, and weekday evenings are quiet. Access is free to the open slopes, while ski lifts and the gondola charge fares and have opening hours that should be checked in advance. Drone flights are restricted within the nature park and in Sofia airspace. A 70-200mm telephoto for the city and a sturdy tripod for post-sunset exposures are the key kit, and warm clothing and a headlamp are important for the walk back in the dark. Restrooms, food and water are available at the hotels, cafes and ski facilities around Aleko during opening hours.
