Cherni Vrah, at 2,290 m, is the highest summit of the Vitosha massif above Sofia, Bulgaria, and the walk from Aleko is the classic way to reach it. Aleko, at about 1,810 m, is the main ski and hiking base in Vitosha Nature Park. Visitors reach it by the Simeonovo gondola, which lifts them most of the way up from the southeastern edge of Sofia, or by car or taxi along the Aleko mountain road, where parking fills early on winter weekends and fine summer days. No permit is required for day hiking. The route is about 4 km one way and climbs roughly 480 m, taking about 1.5 to 2 hours up and about 1.25 hours down. It is rated moderate because of the altitude gain and exposure to wind rather than technical difficulty. The path follows the open ridge above the tree line, with a mix of dirt, gravel and rocky stretches, and there is little shade, so sun protection and a windproof jacket are both necessary. Along the way hikers cross high-mountain meadows and boulder fields, with wide views over Sofia on clear days and toward the Rila and Balkan ranges. Near the top stand the summit marker and the communications installations on Cherni Vrah, and the final section can be windy even in summer. Most hikers go to the summit and return the same way, but they can also continue along the ridge toward other Vitosha trailheads with a pre-arranged lift. Mountain huts and cafes operate around Aleko, offering a place to buy drinks and food before or after the climb, but there is no reliable water on the ridge, so hikers carry about 2 litres. Weather can change fast, with fog, storms and strong wind; if conditions deteriorate, turning back toward Aleko along the same ridge is the standard bail-out. In winter the route needs snowshoes or crampons, navigation skill and an avalanche-aware, experienced approach.
