Bargaining is NOT standard in São Paulo malls or fixed-price stores — prices are fixed and negotiation may be seen as odd or mildly rude
At street markets (Feira Benedito Calixto, Feira da Liberdade), light bargaining is acceptable — especially for buying multiple items
In Bom Retiro and Brás wholesale garment shops, asking for a discount on bulk purchases ('Tem desconto pra mais de uma peça?') is normal and expected
Start by asking 'Tem desconto?' (Is there a discount?) rather than stating a lower price outright
Customs & restrictions
What you can and can't take home.
Restrictions: Cannot export antiques or indigenous artifacts without permits from IPHAN (heritage agency). Precious gemstones can be exported with a receipt from licensed jewelers such as H.Stern.
Tax Refund: Brazil offers no VAT refund scheme for tourists at present.
Duty Free: Standard Brazilian customs allowance: US$500 purchased duty-free at international airports (Guarulhos GRU). Alcohol: 12 liters; tobacco: 25 cigarettes or similar.
Shipping: International shipping from São Paulo is more developed than elsewhere in Brazil given the city's logistics infrastructure, though Correios (postal service) remains slow. FedEx and DHL have numerous branches in Itaim Bibi and Jardins for reliable courier shipping.
