Trilha da Pedra Grande (Nucleo Pedra Grande, Cantareira)

The Pedra Grande trail begins at the Horto Florestal entrance of the Parque Estadual da Cantareira in the Zona Norte of Sao Paulo, reached by car or rideshare, with the nearest metro station at Tucuruvi (Line 1-Blue) followed by a short taxi ride. A paid park entry ticket is required at the gate, and the park is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. The route covers 7.3 km round trip with about 280 m of cumulative elevation gain, climbing steadily through dense secondary Atlantic Forest on a mixed dirt-and-rock forest track. The final approach to the Pedra Grande outcrop involves a short scramble over exposed granite, the only technical section on an otherwise straightforward climb; sturdy footwear with grip is recommended for this stretch. Shade from the forest canopy covers most of the route, with full sun exposure only at the summit rock itself. Along the way, hikers pass secondary paths branching toward other nuclei of the Cantareira reserve; the main trail is well signposted, and the granite outcrop marks the natural turn-around point for a round trip. There is no potable water source or refuge hut along the route, so hikers should carry all water needed for the 3-4 hour outing. From the top, the bald granite dome opens onto a wide panorama over the northern districts of Sao Paulo, including Tucuruvi, Santana and the distant city skyline, making it one of the most rewarding urban viewpoints in the state park system.
