Trilha do Pai Ze (Pico do Jaragua)

The Trilha do Pai Ze climbs from the main gate of the Parque Estadual do Jaragua in the Zona Noroeste of Sao Paulo to the summit of Pico do Jaragua, which at 1,135 metres is the highest point within the city limits. The park gate is reachable by car, or by bus routes from Pirituba and Perus that stop near the entrance. The round-trip distance is 5.8 km with 375 m of cumulative elevation gain, making it steep and sustained rather than technical, on a dirt-and-root forest path through remnant Atlantic Forest. Shade covers most of the ascent, giving way to open sky near the summit viewing platform. The trail surface can become slippery after rain, particularly on the steeper switchbacks in the upper third of the climb, and after summer storms sections turn muddy. There are no water sources or shelters along the route, so hikers carry everything needed for the roughly 2.5-hour round trip. The trail passes rock outcrops and dense forest before opening onto the summit's paved viewing platform, which functions as the natural turn-around point and offers a 360-degree panorama over the Sao Paulo metropolitan skyline, including views toward the Serra da Cantareira and, on clear days, the coastal range.
