Rua 25 de Março is a famously chaotic open-air and wholesale shopping district in São Paulo's historic center, where thousands of small storefronts and street stalls pack a dense grid of streets selling fabric, costume jewelry, party decorations, toys, stationery and imported electronics at bargain prices. The street has served as the city's main wholesale commerce hub since the early 20th century, originally built around the textile trade and now expanded into a sprawling district covering dozens of surrounding blocks and several indoor shopping galleries. Visitors browsing at a leisurely pace typically spend one to two hours, though serious bargain hunters can easily lose half a day moving between stalls and covered galleries. The street is at its most overwhelming, and most interesting to see, in the weeks before Christmas and other major holidays, when extended hours and holiday decorations draw huge crowds. Weekday mornings, particularly before 10AM, are the calmest time to browse without being swept along in foot traffic; by early afternoon the narrow sidewalks are often at capacity with shoppers and delivery carts moving between stalls.
