Mercado Municipal de São Paulo (Mercadão)

The Mercado Municipal de São Paulo, known locally as the Mercadão, is a soaring covered market hall opened in 1933 near the historic center, built with stained-glass windows depicting rural harvest scenes above rows of stalls selling fruit, spices, dried meats, cheeses and seafood. Visitors come as much to eat as to shop: the market's signature dish is the towering mortadella sandwich, piled high with thin-sliced mortadella and served at counter stalls upstairs, alongside pastel de bacalhau, a fried salt-cod pastry, and stacks of exotic tropical fruit rarely seen outside Brazil. The ground floor is dense with produce, spice and deli stalls, while the mezzanine holds the sit-down lanchonete counters where most visitors eat. A visit of about an hour covers a walk through the stalls and a sandwich, though photographers often linger longer under the stained glass and cast-iron vaulted arches, which are best lit around midday. The market gets loud and crowded around typical lunch hours, especially on Saturdays, when lines for the mortadella stalls can stretch well past the counter; weekday mid-mornings are noticeably calmer and give more room to browse the produce stalls before the lunch rush. Because the building is fully enclosed and always at street level, it makes an easy stop between the nearby São Bento and Praça da Sé metro stations and the historic center's other landmarks.
