Maresias, São Sebastião

Maresias is the best-known surf and nightlife beach on the São Sebastião stretch of the São Paulo litoral norte, running roughly three kilometers along Avenida Dr. José Bento Ribeiro Dantas. The sand is coarse and golden, and the water is exposed to consistent south swell, giving it a reputation as one of the state's premier surf breaks alongside a livelier social scene than the calmer coves nearby. The beach is open and shaped in a long shallow arc rather than a sheltered cove, with the central section busiest and the far ends quieter. Amenities are dense along the beachfront: surf schools and board rental stands cluster near the main access points, beach bars and kiosks serve food and drinks through the afternoon, and by evening several beach clubs and bars host DJs and live music that give Maresias its reputation as a nightlife destination for São Paulo weekenders. Sunbed and umbrella rental is available from the kiosks, though there is no continuous boardwalk. The beach draws a younger, more social crowd than the family beaches further south, particularly from December through Carnival season. Reaching Maresias from São Paulo city takes a bus from the Tietê terminal to São Sebastião, roughly four to five hours, followed by a short local bus or taxi ride to the beach itself.
