Kitesurfing and Windsurfing — Canal de São Sebastião

The Canal de São Sebastião, the strait separating Ilhabela from the mainland about 200km east of São Paulo city and reached by ferry from São Sebastião, is one of the state's best-known kitesurfing and windsurfing spots thanks to a funnel effect that channels wind between the island and the coast into reliable afternoon breeze for much of the year. Beginners typically start with a 2-hour lesson covering kite or sail control on land before moving into the water with an instructor nearby, while experienced riders can rent equipment by the half-day and head straight out; basic swimming ability and comfort in open water are prerequisites, and instructors generally set a minimum age around 8-10 for supervised beginner lessons. Kites, boards, sails, and harnesses are available to rent from beachfront schools including Ilhabela Kite Club, which also supplies wetsuits on cooler or windier days; participants should bring their own swimwear, sun protection, and a rash guard for sun and harness chafing. Ilhabela Kite Club and the other beachfront schools operating along Praia da Enseada employ instructors certified through recognised kitesurfing training bodies and monitor wind and boat traffic in the channel before sending riders out. Lessons open with a safety briefing on the kite's power zone, self-rescue technique, and the channel's boat traffic patterns, and schools keep a rescue boat on standby during lessons given the channel is a working shipping lane as well as a wind-sports spot. July through September brings the strongest, most consistent winds, but the channel's geography produces usable afternoon wind for kitesurfing and windsurfing across most of the year.
