Rock Climbing — Pedra Grande, Atibaia

Pedra Grande is a large granite dome inside Parque Municipal Edmundo Zanoni in Atibaia, about 65km northeast of São Paulo city, and one of the most established rock-climbing sites in the state with routes ranging from easy multi-pitch slabs to technical crack and face climbs. Guided half-day sessions suit both complete beginners and climbers with some outdoor experience, since local guides set up top-rope routes on the easier grades while offering harder leads for stronger climbers; a basic level of fitness helps but no prior climbing experience is required for the introductory routes. Guides supply ropes, harnesses, and helmets, and climbing shoes are recommended but can often be rented locally; participants should bring their own water, sun protection, and a light layer for the exposed summit. The guides operating at Pedra Grande are registered with CREA, Brazil's regional engineering and geosciences council that also credentials outdoor activity professionals, and are experienced with the dome's specific rock quality and anchor points. Sessions open with a safety briefing covering knot checks, belay commands, and fall procedure, and guides carry a first-aid kit and maintain mobile phone contact for evacuation coordination given the park's road access to the summit area. April through September is the dry season and the preferred climbing window, since the granite gets noticeably slippery when wet and afternoon storms are more common in the summer months; guides may shorten or cancel sessions if rain moves in.
