The Sebilj is a wooden Ottoman-style public fountain at the centre of Baščaršija Square, the old bazaar quarter of Sarajevo in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The current structure dates from 1891 and was designed by the Czech-born architect Alexander Wittek in a pseudo-Moorish style, replacing an earlier fountain on the site.

Its carved timber pavilion with a copper-covered roof, a small drinking spout and arched openings is surrounded by the flagstoned square known as Pigeon Square, where flocks of pigeons gather and give the scene much of its character. The frame depends on how the photographer stands. From the east side the fountain sits in front of the Baščaršija Mosque approach and low shopfronts, while from the west it aligns with the long axis of Mudželiti and the lanes of copper workers. A 50 mm prime suits portraits of locals and detail shots of the carving, and a wider lens helps if the pavilion is to be shown within the square. Light is best early in the morning, when low sun comes along the square and the stone is still dry and quiet. Harsh midday sun flattens the carving and produces strong shadows under the roof, while overcast afternoons soften the contrast and reduce glare. Autumn and spring offer comfortable temperatures and gentle light, and winter adds mist or snow that suits atmospheric images. Crowds arrive from mid-morning, particularly in summer, when tour groups and café patrons fill the square, so tripod space is limited by mid-morning. A tripod is generally tolerated at dawn but is impractical later, and a handheld approach at a higher ISO is more realistic. Feeding the pigeons is a popular activity, and visitors who include the birds should be mindful of walking space. No access fee applies, and no special permit is needed for personal photography. Drone flights over the old bazaar are restricted and need prior permission from the aviation authority. Cafés on the square and surrounding lanes provide restrooms and drinking water, and the fountain's spout supplies free drinking water.
