Lukomir is the highest and most isolated permanently inhabited village in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located on the Bjelašnica mountain above the Rakitnica canyon, in the municipality of Konjic in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It sits at around 1,500 metres, and its traditional stone houses with wooden shingle roofs cling to the edge of the mountain with views over the deep gorge. Most residents live here only in the warm months, moving to lower villages for winter, and the road is generally open from May to October. The village is reached by car or 4WD from Sarajevo in about two hours, or by summer minivan day tours that cost roughly BAM 70 to 120, and by hiking routes, including from Umoljani and across the Bjelašnica plateau. Visitors spend half a day or more walking among the houses, visiting the small ethnographic displays and cafés, and following the paths toward the canyon viewpoints. The village also has stećci, medieval stone tombstones, in a nearby graveyard. Shepherds graze sheep on the surrounding meadows, and local families may sell cheese, wool socks and homemade food to visitors. June to September offers the best weather, with wildflowers in early summer, though weather can change quickly at altitude and mist or cold wind can arrive without warning. The best photo angle is from the edge of the village looking down into the canyon, with houses in the foreground. Mornings are clear and calm, and tour groups tend to arrive from late morning. Visitors should respect residents' privacy, ask before photographing people, and carry water, layers and sturdy footwear.
