Innsbruck is the capital of the Austrian state of Tyrol, a city of about 132,000 people on the River Inn with the Nordkette mountain range rising directly behind the Old Town. It combines Habsburg-era landmarks such as the Golden Roof with cable cars that reach 2,334 m in about 20 minutes.
Innsbruck is a student and ski town with a compact, safe nightlife: Gasthäuser and beer halls in the Altstadt, bars and a garden on the Hofgarten side, live music in the railway viaduct arches near the Sill, and a casino. Most traditional venues close by 23:00 and bars by 02:00.
The Altstadt (Kiebachgasse and Herzog-Friedrich-Straße) is for drinks and wine, the viaduct arches (Viaduktbogen) for concerts, and Treibhaus for culture and cafe-bar evenings. Weekend nights run later; Sunday and Monday are quiet.
