The Cascade Complex is a monumental limestone stairway rising from Tamanyan Street in Yerevan's Kentron district up the slope towards the Victory Park ridge. Planned by the architect Alexander Tamanyan in the 1920s as a green ceremonial link between the lower city and the hills, it was built in a stepped Soviet form in the late twentieth century and later finished and opened up as an arts space. Visitors climb a sequence of broad terraces with fountains, flower beds and an open-air sculpture collection that includes works by Fernando Botero, among them his large Cat on the lower plaza, alongside many contemporary pieces scattered along the terraces. Inside the structure an escalator hall runs through several levels of exhibition space connected to the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, so the climb can be done either on the outdoor steps or under cover. Roughly 570 steps lead to the top terrace, where the view stretches across the city and, in clear weather, to the snow-capped cone of Mount Ararat across the border in Turkey. Most visitors take one to one and a half hours to walk up, stop at each terrace and photograph the sculptures. The lower terraces are lively through the evening with cafes, fountains and local families, while the upper terraces are calmer. Late afternoon to sunset gives the best light and the clearest view of Ararat before haze builds; mornings are the quietest. The complex is within walking distance of the Opera House and Freedom Square, and a path continues up to Victory Park and the Mother Armenia monument for those wanting to extend the climb.
