Partido de la Costa Beach Strip

nature1-5 days Adult: Free · Child: Free

The Partido de la Costa encompasses a string of beach resorts including San Clemente del Tuyu, Santa Teresita, Mar del Tuyu, and Las Toninas. This 100km stretch of Atlantic coast is popular with family travelers and offers a more affordable and relaxed beach experience than Pinamar or Mar del Plata.

The Partido de la Costa is a municipal district encompassing roughly 100 kilometres of Atlantic coastline in the northern section of Buenos Aires Province's beach zone, beginning with San Clemente del Tuyú at its northern tip and continuing south through Santa Teresita, Mar del Tuyú, Costa del Este, Aguas Verdes, La Lucila del Mar, Las Toninas, and several smaller localities. This continuous beach strip is the most family-oriented and price-accessible section of the Buenos Aires Atlantic coast, positioned as an affordable alternative to the more fashionable resorts of Pinamar, Villa Gesell, and Mar del Plata to the south.

San Clemente del Tuyú, the northernmost and most developed town, is anchored by Mundo Marino, one of the largest oceanarium and marine park facilities in South America. The park features dolphin and sea lion shows alongside educational displays about Atlantic marine life. It draws heavily from the family market and is the primary reason many visitors come to this part of the coast. Reserva Natural Punta Rasa, immediately north of San Clemente, is a significant bird sanctuary at the tip of a narrow sand peninsula where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic; shorebird concentrations here during spring migration can be extraordinary.

The beaches throughout the Partido de la Costa tend to be wide and gently shelving, suitable for young children, and the water temperature in January and February reaches 22–24°C. The infrastructure of balnearios (beach clubs) is extensive; daily rates for umbrella and chair rental are substantially lower than at the more fashionable resorts. Accommodation ranges from camping grounds and small hostel-style apartments through to mid-range family hotels.

The driving route along Ruta Provincial 11 through the Partido de la Costa, with its succession of small resort towns each with its own central plaza and beach access street, gives a genuine sense of the Buenos Aires Province beach holiday as experienced by the middle-class Argentine family. Off-season (April to November) the towns are extremely quiet and several businesses close, but the beaches themselves are open and deserted.

FAQ

Is Mundo Marino suitable for all ages?

Yes, though the shows and interactive elements are targeted primarily at children aged 4–14. The facility is large and can comfortably occupy a full day. Shows are in Spanish; the marine exhibits are largely visual and accessible to all visitors.

How does the Partido de la Costa compare to Pinamar?

The Partido de la Costa is more affordable, more family-oriented, and considerably less fashionable than Pinamar. Beaches are similarly wide and clean but resort infrastructure and restaurant quality are more modest. It suits families with young children and budget-conscious travellers.

What is Punta Rasa and why visit?

Punta Rasa is a narrow sandspit at the northern tip of the Partido de la Costa where the Río de la Plata meets the open Atlantic. It is a significant migratory shorebird stopover, and during October and November thousands of long-distance migrants including hudsonian godwit can be seen. Entry is managed by the Prefectura Naval.

Accessibility

Beach access varies by town. Many balnearios have wooden boardwalks extending to the sand, and some provide basic beach wheelchairs on request. Mundo Marino has accessible pathways throughout the park. The Punta Rasa reserve involves sandy and dirt tracks that are not suitable for wheelchairs.

When to visit

January and February are peak season with warm sea temperatures (22–24°C) and full facilities open. March offers warm seas with much smaller crowds. October and November are ideal for birdwatching at Punta Rasa. Avoid the first two weeks of January when the region reaches maximum capacity.
