Valbona Valley National Park

Multi-day trek recommended Adult: Free · Child: Free

A pristine alpine valley in the Accursed Mountains offering some of Albania's best hiking, including the famous Valbona to Theth trek. The valley features traditional guesthouses, crystal-clear rivers, and dramatic mountain scenery.

Valbona Valley National Park occupies a high alpine valley in the Prokletije range — known internationally as the Accursed Mountains — in north-eastern Albania, close to the borders with Kosovo and Montenegro. The Valbona River runs through the valley floor for approximately 26 kilometres from its source glacial cirques to where it joins the Drin system, carving a course between peaks that rise above 2,600 metres. The park was established in 1966 and covers around 8,000 hectares of beech and pine forest, alpine meadow, and karst terrain.

The valley is best known internationally as the starting or finishing point of the Valbona-to-Theth traverse, one of the most celebrated multi-day hikes in the western Balkans. The crossing climbs from Valbona village to the Valbona Pass at approximately 1,800 metres before descending into the Theth Valley on the other side. The route takes between six and nine hours depending on pace and conditions and passes through open ridges with panoramic views of the surrounding ranges, scattered stone shelters, and occasional shepherd camps. Hikers commonly complete it east-to-west — Valbona to Theth — to align with the ferry approach from Koman Lake.

Within the valley itself, shorter walks lead from the village cluster toward the river gorges, where the water runs a vivid turquoise-green over white limestone. Swimming is possible in the calmer pools during summer months. Traditional guesthouses — known locally as bujtina — provide accommodation, home-cooked meals, and route guidance. Most are basic but hospitable, with mountain views from most rooms.

Wildlife in the park includes brown bear, wolf, lynx, chamois, and golden eagle, though sightings of larger mammals require patience and early-morning walks away from the busier trails. The wildflower season in late May and early June is particularly rich on the higher meadows.

The valley is accessible by a combination of the Koman Lake ferry and a shared van from Fierza to Valbona village — roughly half a day from Shkodër. The park is free to enter; guesthouse accommodation should be booked in advance for July and August. The hiking season runs from mid-May to late October.

FAQ

How do visitors get to Valbona Valley?

The standard approach is the Koman Lake ferry from Koman, followed by a shared van from Fierza to Valbona village — roughly half a day from Shkodër. A road route via Bajram Curri is also possible but involves a longer drive. The ferry approach is the more scenic option.

When is the best time to hike in Valbona Valley?

Mid-May to late October is the hiking season. July and August are the most popular months and guesthouses fill quickly; booking accommodation two to four weeks ahead is recommended for peak season. Late May and early June offer wildflowers and fewer visitors; September brings autumn colour and cooler temperatures.

Is the Valbona-to-Theth hike suitable for beginners?

The crossing requires a full day of sustained walking with approximately 1,100 metres of ascent and 1,200 metres of descent. It is considered moderate to challenging and requires proper footwear, layered clothing, and sufficient water and food. First-time hikers in poor physical condition should hire a local guide from the village.

Is accommodation available in the valley?

Yes, traditional guesthouses throughout the valley offer beds and meals at reasonable rates. In peak season (July–August) these fill quickly and advance booking is strongly recommended. Most guesthouses can arrange packed lunches and route guidance for the Theth crossing.

Accessibility

The valley floor track from the village to the river gorges is unpaved and suitable for fit walkers but not wheelchair users. The Valbona-to-Theth hike involves significant elevation change on rocky mountain trails and is not accessible for visitors with mobility impairments. Visitors with limited mobility can enjoy the valley scenery from the village area and along the lower riverside paths near the guesthouses.

When to visit

Late May to early June offers wildflowers and lighter crowds; July and August are peak season with maximum services but full guesthouses requiring advance booking. September is excellent for cooler temperatures and autumn colour with fewer visitors on the trails.
