Koman Lake Ferry
A spectacular 2-3 hour ferry journey through fjord-like landscapes, often called one of Europe's most beautiful boat trips. The route connects Koman to Fierza through dramatic mountain scenery and emerald waters.
The Koman Lake ferry connects the dam terminal at Koman with the small settlement of Fierza, 34 kilometres to the north-east, through a reservoir landscape frequently described as one of the most spectacular inland water journeys in Europe. The reservoir was created by the Koman hydroelectric dam, completed in 1985, which flooded a section of the Drin River gorge and produced a winding body of water enclosed by limestone mountains rising directly from the surface. The result is a fjord-like corridor with near-vertical walls, forested ridges, and hanging valleys that would otherwise be inaccessible by any other means.
The ferry operates daily, with the main departure from Koman around 9:00 am. The journey to Fierza takes approximately two to two and a half hours in each direction under normal conditions, though water levels and seasonal factors can affect timing. The vessel is a working utility ferry rather than a dedicated tourist boat: it carries local residents, supplies, livestock, and motorcycles alongside visitors. Passenger capacity is limited; in July and August demand consistently exceeds places on the most popular morning service.
The visual experience changes significantly through the journey. The lower section near Koman passes through open stretches of water with distant ridges. As the ferry enters the gorge proper, the walls close in and the water deepens to a luminous green-blue. Waterfalls, abandoned villages perched above the flood line, and occasional eagles overhead punctuate the passage through the narrowest sections. The final approach to Fierza opens into a broader valley as the reservoir shallows.
Passengers commonly stand on deck for the gorge section despite bench seating available inside. The right side of the vessel facing toward Fierza provides slightly more consistent views of the most dramatic walls. Bringing food and water is advisable as there is no on-board catering.
The ferry is the standard approach to Valbona Valley National Park: from Fierza a shared van or taxi serves Valbona village. Return journeys from Fierza to Koman depart in the early afternoon. A combined Koman Lake ferry and Valbona Valley itinerary is one of the most popular multi-day routes in northern Albania.

FAQ
Do visitors need to book the Koman Lake ferry in advance?
In July and August the morning service fills quickly and passengers are turned away when capacity is reached. Arriving at the Koman terminal before 8 am is strongly recommended in peak season. Outside July and August advance planning is less critical, though arriving early remains advisable.
How long is the Koman Lake ferry journey?
The one-way journey from Koman to Fierza takes approximately two to two and a half hours. The return from Fierza to Koman departs in the early afternoon and takes a similar time. A round trip in a single day is possible but leaves little time in Fierza for onward connections.
Can visitors take a vehicle on the Koman Lake ferry?
Motorcycles and small vehicles are occasionally carried when space allows, but this is not a standard vehicle ferry service. Most visitors board as foot passengers and arrange onward transport from Fierza separately through shared vans or taxis to Valbona.
Is the Koman Lake ferry suitable for visitors prone to motion sickness?
The reservoir is enclosed and calm with no open-sea swell. The ride is smooth in all but exceptionally windy conditions, and the gorge sections involve slow manoeuvring rather than speed. Motion sickness is rarely an issue on this route.
Accessibility
The Koman terminal has a basic quayside with no step-free boarding infrastructure; boarding involves stepping over the gunwale of the ferry, which requires some physical agility. The deck area has bench seating and the interior is a simple open cabin. Visitors using wheelchairs will face significant difficulty boarding and should inquire at the terminal about available assistance in advance.
When to visit
Morning light illuminates the canyon walls most effectively and the 9 am departure catches the best conditions. May, June, and September offer calm weather, smaller crowds, and vivid water colour; July and August are the busiest months and the morning ferry consistently reaches capacity.
