Climate Overview

Yemen has diverse climates ranging from hot coastal desert along the Red Sea and Arabian Sea coasts to cool highland temperatures in Sana'a (sitting at 2,300m elevation) where winters can be cold. Socotra Island has a unique tropical monsoon climate with the Indian Ocean monsoon closing the island June-September. The best time to visit is November to April when highlands are mild and Socotra is accessible.

Eid al-Fitr

Major Islamic celebration marking end of fasting month. Three-day holiday with family gatherings, special meals, new clothes, and gift-giving. Festive atmosphere throughout Yemen with special sweets and celebrations. Non-Muslims welcome to observe but most businesses closed.

Eid al-Adha

Ramadan

Yemeni Coffee Harvest Season

Socotra Monsoon Season End

End of monsoon season marks reopening of Socotra to tourism. Island transforms from brown to green. Dragon's blood trees in full vigor. Best time for unique endemic flora. Tour operators resume services after summer closure.

Date Harvest Festival

Date palm harvest season celebrated in Hadhramaut Valley and coastal areas. Fresh dates abundant in markets. Traditional date pressing for date honey (dibs). Local celebrations in farming communities though tourism limited during hot summer.
