Getting Around Hà Nội 2026

Hà Nội (Hanoi) is the capital of Vietnam and its cultural heart, a city of lakes, tree-lined French colonial boulevards, and a thousand-year-old Old Quarter where every street once specialised in a single trade. Visitors come for street food such as phở and bún chả, egg coffee, water puppet theatre, temples and museums, and easy access to Hạ Long Bay, Ninh Bình, and the northern mountains.

Public

Growing but still limited: two metro lines (2A and 3), a large city bus network at 7,000-9,000 VND per ride, and Vietnam Railways trains from Hà Nội Station; buses are cheap but crowded and hard to navigate without Google Maps or the TND Buýt app

Taxi

Excellent and cheap: Grab (cars and bikes), Xanh SM electric taxis and Be are on every corner; a short city ride costs 30,000-80,000 VND (~$1.15-$3.10)

Rental

Self-drive is not recommended: traffic is chaotic and motorbike rental needs a valid licence and insurance; a car with driver from about 1,500,000 VND (~$57.70) per day is easier

Walking

The Old Quarter and the Hoàn Kiếm Lake area are compact and walkable, but pavements are blocked by parked motorbikes and street stalls, and crossing roads takes practice; walk slowly and steadily
