American Club Resort

The American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin holds the distinction of being the only AAA Five Diamond resort in the state and one of fewer than 60 such properties in North America. Built in 1918 as a dormitory for immigrant workers at the Kohler Company manufacturing plant, the Tudor Revival brick structure was converted into a hotel in 1981 under the direction of the Kohler family, who preserved the original ceramic tile floors, carved wooden accents, and broad facade that give the property its singular character among Wisconsin lodging.

The resort sits within the Kohler Company's planned village, approximately 55 miles north of Milwaukee and 6 miles west of Sheboygan, Lake Michigan. The grounds are intentionally self-contained, and most guests rarely need to leave. Four championship golf courses anchor the resort's sporting identity: Whistling Straits, which hosted the 2020 Ryder Cup (postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19), and Blackwolf Run, host of multiple U.S. Women's Open Championships, are consistently ranked among the best public-access courses in the United States. The Kohler Waters Spa occupies a full dedicated building featuring hydrotherapy pools, soaking rooms, and bodywork treatments built around the company's plumbing heritage, with Kohler-branded fixtures integrated throughout.

Accommodations include rooms in the original American Club building, the adjacent Carriage House, and the Manor House. Bathrooms throughout feature Kohler fixtures — a quiet alignment between brand and hospitality. Dining spans five restaurants: the Immigrant Restaurant for fine dining, the Horse & Plow pub for casual meals, and three additional options including the golf clubhouse venues. An indoor pool, tennis courts, cycling trails, and a nature center round out recreation for non-golfers. The resort handles extensive wedding and corporate retreat business across its indoor and outdoor venues.

Tips for visiting

  • Golf tee times at Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run book out weeks or months ahead during warm season — reserve before finalizing your travel dates.
  • The Carriage House rooms offer slightly more separation from the main building's traffic and tend to feel quieter for midweek stays.
  • Kohler Design Center, a free museum showcasing the company's plumbing and kitchen design history, is a short walk from the resort and worth a visit even for non-golf guests.
  • Non-golfers will find the spa, indoor pool, cycling trails, and the Sheboygan lakefront (15-minute drive) sufficient for a two-night stay without setting foot on a course.
