Pipestem Resort State Park McKeever Lodge perches on the rim of a canyon carved by Bluestone River in Summers County, West Virginia, near the community of Pipestem. The park's defining feature is its topography: sheer sandstone walls drop approximately 1,000 feet to a canyon floor accessible only by aerial tramway or a steep hiking trail, creating an experience found nowhere else in West Virginia's state park system. McKeever Lodge, the primary accommodation at the rim level, offers standard lodge rooms and cottages with gorge views, while Mountain Creek Lodge at the canyon floor provides a rare alternative — completely isolated from road traffic and reachable only by the park's gondola tram. The park spans more than 4,000 acres and hosts an extensive trail network, disc golf course, tennis courts, miniature golf, and an outdoor pool at the upper area. The restaurant in McKeever Lodge serves American cuisine with views toward the gorge, and a snack bar near the tram station provides lighter fare during the operating season. Canyon hiking trails descend from the rim to Bluestone River, where wading and fishing for smallmouth bass and catfish draw outdoor enthusiasts. The aerial tramway, carrying passengers 3,600 feet horizontally and approximately 1,000 feet vertically, operates seasonally from May through October and is the park's signature experience. Anglers also have access to nearby Bluestone Lake and Bluestone State Park for additional fishing options. Pipestem's remote location in southern West Virginia — about 30 miles from Beckley and with minimal light pollution — creates exceptional stargazing conditions that add another dimension to the overnight experience.
