Luray Caverns

Luray Caverns is one of the largest and most visited cave systems on the East Coast of the United States, located in Luray, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley. The caves were discovered in 1878 and have been open to the public continuously since that year, making them one of the oldest tourist attractions in the American South. The guided walking tour follows a paved, well-lit path of approximately 1.5 miles through a series of interconnected chambers, each containing formations of extraordinary size and delicacy. The Cathedral, the tour's central space, reaches a height of 155 feet and is named for its soaring stalactite columns and its underground pool — the Reflection Pool — which mirrors the ceiling formations with near-perfect clarity. The Great Stalacpipe Organ, recognized as the world's largest natural musical instrument, uses rubber mallets to tap stalactites across 3.5 acres of cave, producing resonant tones that carry through the chambers during the tour. The constant temperature inside the cave is 54°F (12°C) year-round, making it a cool retreat in Virginia's humid summer and noticeably chilly in winter — a light jacket is always advisable regardless of season. Above ground, the property includes a Car and Carriage Caravan Museum displaying antique vehicles from the 1880s to 1930s, a hedge maze, and a miniature golf course that extend the overall visit. Timed entry tickets are required and typically sell out on summer weekends; booking online at least a few days in advance is strongly recommended.
