Arlington National Cemetery

Arlington National Cemetery is the United States military cemetery on the former Custis-Lee estate in Arlington, Virginia, directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The cemetery is the final resting place of more than 400,000 service members and their dependents, spanning 639 acres of gently rolling land. It draws approximately four million visitors each year, making it one of the most visited sites in the Washington metropolitan area. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is the cemetery's most solemn landmark, guarded continuously by sentinels of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment — known as the Old Guard — 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in all weather. The Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place every 30 minutes from April through September and every hour during other months, and is one of the most precise military rituals performed in the United States. The grave of President John F. Kennedy, marked by an eternal flame on the hillside below Arlington House, is the most visited individual grave site on the grounds. Arlington House, the Greek Revival mansion that served as Robert E. Lee's home before the Civil War, is open for tours and provides historical context for the estate's transformation into a national cemetery. The Women in Military Service for America Memorial at the main Memorial Gate honors women who served in the U.S. armed forces.
