Whitewater Rafting on the New River

The New River in Giles County, Virginia, offers some of the most accessible whitewater rafting in the Mid-Atlantic region. Despite its name, the New River is among the oldest rivers in the world, having carved its course through the Appalachian Mountains over millions of years. The Virginia section, centered near Pembroke and Pearisburg, features Class II and Class III rapids navigable by paddlers without prior experience on guided trips. Half-day excursions cover approximately 5 miles over 3–4 hours on the water, while full-day trips extend to 12 miles with 6–7 hours of paddling and swimming stops. No prior rafting experience is required for the standard Class II–III guided trip, though participants must be comfortable in moving water and able to swim. Minimum age is 7 years old with a minimum weight of 50 lbs for commercial whitewater trips. The season runs from April through October, with spring providing the highest water levels and most dynamic rapids driven by snowmelt and rainfall across the New River watershed. Summer months bring lower, warmer water and calmer rapids, with excellent conditions for swimming in the calm pools between runs; water temperatures typically reach comfortable levels by June. Autumn foliage along the surrounding Appalachian ridgelines makes September and October particularly scenic from the water.
