Temple Square

Temple Square is a 35-acre complex in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and serving as the faith's worldwide headquarters and most visited site. The complex is centered on the Salt Lake Temple, a six-spire granite edifice completed in 1893 after 40 years of construction, which is restricted to members of the church in good standing. Adjacent to the temple, the domed Salt Lake Tabernacle has served as a concert hall since 1867 and is home to the world-famous Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. Free 30-minute organ recitals in the Tabernacle showcase the 11,623-pipe Tabernacle organ — one of the finest classical instruments in North America — and are open to the public daily. Temple Square underwent a comprehensive renovation from 2020 to 2024, reopening with redesigned gardens, new visitor experience centers, and improved accessibility features throughout. The Assembly Hall, a Gothic Revival structure completed in 1880, holds free public concerts on weekends. The adjacent Joseph Smith Memorial Building, a Beaux Arts landmark, includes a rooftop observation level overlooking the temple grounds and a restaurant with valley views. Thursday evening choir rehearsals of the Tabernacle Choir are open to the public from 7:30 PM and are free to attend. At Christmas, Temple Square hosts one of the largest holiday lighting displays in the American West with more than 500,000 lights, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors from late November through early January. The TRAX light rail system stops directly at Temple Square station on the Blue, Red, and Green lines, making it one of the most transit-accessible attractions in Salt Lake City. Knowledgeable volunteer guides offer free walking tours of the grounds throughout operating hours.
