Texas State Capitol

The Texas State Capitol stands at the head of Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas, and has served as the seat of Texas state government since its completion in 1888. Built of distinctive sunset red granite quarried from Marble Falls in the Texas Hill Country, the building rises 308 feet—14 feet taller than the US Capitol in Washington, DC—making it the largest state capitol building by total square footage and the tallest by height in the United States.

The building's exterior combines Renaissance Revival and Classical architecture with ornate carved stonework, bronze doors, and a 15.7-foot zinc statue of the Goddess of Liberty mounted at the dome's pinnacle. The four-acre interior contains 392 rooms, 18 vaults, and extensive marble and granite work. The most striking interior feature is the rotunda, where the dome soars to 218 feet above the terrazzo floor. The floor contains the Great Seal of Texas inlaid in marble; looking upward from the center, the painted state seal repeats at the dome's apex. Distinctive acoustic properties allow whispered conversations from opposite sides of the rotunda to be heard clearly—known as the Whisper Gallery effect.

Free guided tours depart from the south foyer every 15 minutes from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM Monday through Friday, and at extended intervals on weekends. The tour covers both legislative chambers (House and Senate), the restored 19th-century Governor's Reception Room, and portraits of every Texas governor. Self-guided visits are permitted at all hours. The 22-acre grounds surrounding the Capitol include monuments to the Texas Rangers, the Tejano Monument, and a Veterans Memorial. Congress Avenue to the south provides the best distance views of the dome framed by the avenue's corridor.
