Jack Daniel's Distillery

Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, is the oldest registered distillery in the United States, established by Jasper Newton Daniel in 1875 and occupying a limestone-spring hollow in Moore County. The distillery produces one of the world's best-selling whiskeys using a distinctive charcoal-mellowing process known as the Lincoln County Process — the legal distinction between Tennessee whiskey and Kentucky bourbon. The grounds hold a National Historic Landmark designation and are open daily for guided tours. Lynchburg is the seat of Moore County, a dry county where general alcohol sales are prohibited. A legislative exception permits the distillery to sell its products on-site, making the Distillery's tasting room the only place in the county where Jack Daniel's can legally be purchased or consumed by the glass. Tours begin at the main visitor center and proceed on foot through the production areas: the cave spring where iron-free limestone water enters the process, the charcoal-mellowing warehouse where new spirit drips slowly through 10-foot columns of maple charcoal over several days, and the aging rickhouses where barrels mature for a minimum of four years in the Tennessee climate. The Heritage Barrel Tour includes a barrel sample tasting and is the most popular option for first-time visitors. The Master Distiller Tour provides a premium tasting flight with select bottlings. The campus also includes Jack Daniel's original log office building, a gift shop carrying distillery-exclusive bottlings unavailable at retail, and a cooperage demonstration of barrel construction. The town of Lynchburg, a short walk from the distillery entrance, has a historic courthouse square and antique shops worth exploring after the tour.
