Portland Art Museum

The Portland Art Museum at 1219 SW Park Avenue occupies two historic buildings on the South Park Blocks in downtown Portland and is the oldest and largest art museum in the Pacific Northwest, holding a collection of more than 42,000 works spanning 4,000 years of human artistic production. Founded in 1892, the museum's permanent collection encompasses Northwest Coast Indigenous art with particular strength in Plateau, Coast Salish, and Chinookan traditions; Asian decorative arts and ceramics from China, Japan, and Korea; European paintings and prints from the 14th through 19th centuries; and an expanding collection of contemporary and modern American art. The Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation Art Gallery dedicates significant permanent space to Northwest Coast collections including intricately carved cedar boxes, bentwood chests, regalia, and ceremonial objects. The Jubitz Center for Modern and Contemporary Art, connected via an interior bridge, expands the museum's footprint with a dedicated wing for rotating modern exhibitions, large-scale installations, and the museum's growing Pacific Northwest photography holdings. The museum regularly hosts major traveling exhibitions from international institutions, a significant draw that supplements the permanent collection year-round. Thursday and Friday extended hours from 10 AM to 8 PM allow evening visits after work with thinner crowds than weekend afternoons. A Northwest Film Center affiliated with the museum screens independent and international films at the museum and at off-site venues throughout Portland. The museum's café and shop are accessible to visitors and non-visitors alike during open hours.
