Cape Hatteras Lighthouse at Sunrise

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stands 198 feet above the Outer Banks shoreline near Buxton, North Carolina, making it the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States and one of the most iconic coastal photography subjects on the East Coast. The lighthouse's distinctive black-and-white spiral candy-stripe pattern provides a graphic foreground element against any sky condition, but the structure is at its most photogenic in the 30 minutes before sunrise when the eastern horizon transitions from deep indigo to warm amber and the tower's white bands glow in reflected twilight. Photographers typically position themselves on the beach immediately east and slightly south of the lighthouse, using a wide-angle or 24-70mm lens to capture the tower with beach, surf, and dawn sky in a single frame. The Atlantic Ocean to the east means the sun rises directly behind or beside the lighthouse during spring and summer, allowing silhouette compositions at nautical twilight and front-lit shots in the first minutes after the sun clears the horizon. In autumn and winter the sunrise angle shifts southward, creating dramatic side-lighting on the spiral stripes. The area is managed by Cape Hatteras National Seashore with no admission fee for beach access. The lighthouse grounds open at 9am, but beach access and external shooting positions are available at any hour. Drone flights require a permit from the National Park Service and are prohibited without authorization. The beach is typically uncrowded before 7am even in summer. Tripod use is permitted on the beach at all hours. A polarizing filter significantly improves sky saturation and reduces ocean glare in the first hour after sunrise.
