Biltmore Estate — Château South Façade

The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, is the largest privately owned home in the United States — a 179,000-square-foot French Renaissance château designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt and completed in 1895. The south façade, a sweeping limestone elevation facing the formal Italian Garden, is the estate's most photographed exterior. The composition typically incorporates the château's arched entrance loggia, the long axial south terrace, and the formal garden plantings that lead the eye from foreground to the full height of the château roof and turrets. In the early morning, before crowds arrive, the low eastern sun side-lights the limestone façade at a flattering angle that brings out the carved stonework's three-dimensional detail. April is the peak bloom period for the Walled Garden's rose beds, massed tulip plantings, and ornamental borders, which provide colorful foreground interest against the pale stone château. October brings autumn color to the estate's 8,000 acres of Frederick Law Olmsted-designed parkland, surrounding the building with warm foliage. The Biltmore requires a paid admission ticket — typically between USD $65 and $85 depending on the day and season — for access to all grounds and exterior areas used for photography, including the south terrace and Italian Garden. Tripods are permitted on the grounds. Interior photography is restricted in certain historic rooms. Drones are strictly prohibited over the estate.
