Grandfather Mountain

Grandfather Mountain in Linville, North Carolina rises to 5,946 feet and is a UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve recognized for its extraordinary ecological diversity, supporting four distinct climatic zones within a single summit area. The mountain is privately operated with ticketed admission. The signature attraction is the Mile High Swinging Bridge, a suspension bridge spanning a 228-foot chasm near the 5,305-foot mark; on windy days the bridge sways perceptibly, creating an exhilarating experience above tree-canopy level. Views from the bridge and the nearby summit look north and west across the Blue Ridge Parkway route, the Linville Gorge, and on clear days toward Mount Mitchell — the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. The Black Bear Habitat, Cougar Habitat, and Eagle and Otter habitats house native species in large naturalistic enclosures that are particularly popular with families and wildlife photographers. Hiking trails range from a short paved path to the bridge to the strenuous backcountry Grandfather Trail, which traverses exposed ridgeline with iron rungs and wooden ladders through some of the most challenging terrain in the southern Appalachians. The annual Highland Games held in July are the largest Scottish Highland Games in North America and are staged at the mountain's base. The museum and nature center near the entrance provides ecological context before heading to the bridge.
