Clingmans Dome

Clingmans Dome, at 6,643 feet above sea level, is the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the third-highest peak in the eastern United States, straddling the North Carolina–Tennessee state line in Swain County. The observation tower at the summit — a 54-foot concrete spiral ramp structure built in 1959 — rises above the surrounding spruce-fir forest to offer 360-degree panoramic views that on the clearest days extend 100 miles in all directions across the ridgelines of the southern Appalachians. The access road (Clingmans Dome Road) branches 7 miles from Newfound Gap, is open from April 1 through November 30, and closes during winter when ice makes it impassable. From the parking area, a steep 0.5-mile paved trail ascends approximately 330 feet to the observation ramp. The surrounding high-elevation forest — dense Fraser fir and red spruce woodland — is visually striking; stands have been heavily impacted by the invasive balsam woolly adelgid, giving the ridgeline a mix of living and standing-dead trees. Interpretive signs at the parking area explain the spruce-fir ecosystem and ongoing conservation efforts. The Appalachian Trail traverses the summit ridgeline directly, and hikers can access the Forney Creek Trail and other backcountry routes from the dome parking area. On clear October days, the layered ridgelines blanketed in autumn color create one of the most photographed vistas in the eastern national park system.
