Best Time to Visit

Months to Avoid

January–February

January and February are bitterly cold throughout the state, especially upstate where temperatures regularly drop below 0°F / -18°C and heavy snowfall is common. NYC is cold but manageable with proper clothing.

Climate Overview

New York State has a continental humid climate with four distinct seasons. New York City enjoys relatively mild winters (average low 27°F / -3°C in January) and hot, humid summers (average high 84°F / 29°C in July). Upstate New York is significantly colder in winter, with the Adirondacks frequently seeing temperatures below -20°F / -29°C and over 100 inches of snow annually in some areas. The Finger Lakes benefit from lake-effect moderation, and Long Island has a slightly maritime influence.

Seasonal Breakdown

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

Mar–May

Spring arrives gradually in New York, with March still cold and unpredictable before warming significantly in April and May. Cherry blossoms peak in Central Park in mid-April. The Hudson Valley bursts into bloom in May, and the Finger Lakes vineyards come alive.

Tips: Pack layers — mornings can be cold even in May; carry a light rain jacket as spring showers are frequent

☀️ Summer

Jun–Aug

New York City summers are hot and humid, often reaching 90°F / 32°C with high humidity. Central Park and the city's public pools are packed. Upstate New York offers a welcome retreat — Adirondack summers are mild and perfect for hiking and paddling. Long Island beaches are at their most popular.

Tips: Book accommodation 3+ months ahead; stay hydrated; visit beaches and parks early morning to avoid crowds and peak heat

🍂 Fall

Sep–Nov

Autumn is arguably the finest season in New York State. Temperatures cool from pleasant (70s°F / 21°C) in September to brisk (40s°F / 7°C) in November. Fall foliage transforms the Catskills, Adirondacks, Hudson Valley, and Finger Lakes into a spectacular canvas of red, orange, and gold, typically peaking mid-October.

Tips: Reserve Hudson Valley accommodation weeks in advance for peak foliage weekends; October is one of the busiest (and priciest) periods for upstate NY

❄️ Winter

Dec–Feb

Winter in NYC is cold but lively, especially during the December holiday season when skating rinks, the Rockefeller Center tree, holiday markets, and festive lights make the city magical. Upstate winters are severe — ideal for skiers heading to the Adirondacks (Whiteface Mountain) or Hunter Mountain in the Catskills.

Tips: Dress in warm, waterproof layers; hotel prices in NYC drop significantly in January–February after the holidays; ski resorts in the Adirondacks and Catskills offer winter sports from December through March
